Talking Breakthroughs…..

Have you ever been banging your head against the wall, time and time again, over something you just can’t figure out?  For me, it’s my golf game.  I remember when I first got into swimming in the Atlanta triathlon community.  My swim coach would say…”hold your hand like this….enter the water like that….now drag your arm and ‘catch’….and don’t forget to breathe bilaterally”…. Back then, I also knew very little about the game of golf, but I found myself saying as I was breathing bilaterally, “This seems more complicated than golf!”.

But eventually, I would find some breakthroughs in my swimming.  And, fast-forwarding to today, there are similar days on the golf course where everything falls into place…..moments of breakthroughs!

This week, we’ll be talking about Chapter 2 of our new study, “Don’t Waste Your Life“.  Similar to my comments above, our author describes times early in his Christian journey where he struggled with key concepts; especially as they related to the Bible.  I won’t give away all the details…hence you need to do some (or all) of the reading!  But you’ll see where Piper finds his breakthroughs and, more importantly, how those discoveries paved the path for years to come.

I’ll be leading us this week in our discussion on chapter 2.  Gather at 7:30 am at The Cornwell Center.  We’ll kick things into gear at 7:45 am.

Big changes coming…..Starting Friday!

New year.  New study series.  And “new” name!

Friday Morning Men’s Fellowship (FMMF) – Charlotte, will transition over the next few weeks to a new name…”Starting Friday“.

What is “Starting Friday“?  After 3+ great years of alignment with Leadership Ministries (out of Atlanta), we are making the decision to focus on growing our Christian footprint here in the “queen city”, Charlotte.  Much of our focus will remain the same, strategically speaking….aligning men to a relationship with Jesus Christ.  However, from a tactical perspective, “Starting Friday” will focus not only into fellowship, but also service, community, and family.  All aligned back to Charlotte.

More to flush out over the next few weeks….our initial discussions will begin this week….starting Friday!  The website branding and functions will evolve over the next couple weeks.  Please be patient during this transition!

Mike will kick off the new series this week, “Don’t Waste Your Life“.  Homework is to read the intro and chapter 1.  Don’t have the book yet?  No worries….show up anyway!

Again….it’s all …. Starting Friday!

Don’t Waste Your Life….new series begins this week!

Our new series, “Don’t Waste Your Life” by John Piper begins this Friday, JAN 17th.  If you can, please order the book ahead of time through Amazon, etc.  But if you find the week getting ahead of you, and you don’t order the book, STILL COME this Friday!  You will always gain something even if you don’t get the lesson homework done ahead of time.  I promise!

Speaking of homework, this week we’ll tackle the book Introduction (Preface) and Chapter 1 (My Search for a Single Passion to Live By).  Mike Lenhart will lead us this week to kick off the new series.

And, if you’re feeling really adventurous, watch John Piper’s sermon on “Don’t Waste Your Life” from a couple years ago.  It’s a long sermon, but you only need to watch about the first 15 minutes or so.  Buckle in, however!  John is a very animated and firey speaker!  Here’s the YouTube link for to watch:

As you know, we look for men to step up each week and lead the designated lesson for that week.  So, please consider signing up for one or more of the weeks where we need a leader.  Here’s the SignUp Genius link for volunteering to lead:

Our plan is to study this series over the next 10 weeks; a chapter per week.  Very easy readings!  This schedule will take us up just prior to Palm Sunday.  As a group, we’ll consider some social event and/or speaker prior to taking a break for Easter.

Finally, a new series is a great way to invite a friend, neighbor, co-worker, family member to join us.  Consider reaching out and extending that invitation today!

See you on Friday at the Cornwell Center.  Fellowship begins at 7:30 am.  Mike will kick things off at 7:45 am.

Starting Friday Curriculum…for the next few months….!

This morning, we discussed our next several ideas for book studies and speakers (perhaps).  Here’s the list for the immediate future.  Next Friday, JAN 17th, we’ll launch into “Don’t Waste Your Life” by John Piper.  Please order the book in advance at the link below.

Planned Study Series, Starting Friday (in chronological order):

Looking forward to the start of a great year for Starting Friday!

New Year….New Study Series….?

Happy New Year, gents!  We’re back on track this week, after a well-deserved holiday break for the past 2 or 3 weeks.

We’ll gather this Friday at The Cornwell Center.  Here’s the good news…..”no formal homework“!

Can I get an “AMEN“!!??

Instead, please bring your study series ideas to share with the group.  Our goal is to set the course for our next study series by the end of this week’s fellowship, as well as have a good backlog of two or three more to tackle down the road.

We’ve had a few brought up already just prior to the holiday break:

-Find a good book of devotionals.  Assign one devotional each week, with someone leading the discussion.

The Gospel According to God by John MacArthur

Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Building Lasting Faith in Your Kids (NEW) by Kara Powell

-Pick a book of the Bible to “deep dive” and study

So put on your best selling cap for this Friday…or perhaps come to take it all in.

See you this Friday, ready to go at 7:45 am.  Mike will facilitate this week’s discussions.

A Child is Born!

Blessings to you and yours!  FMMF Charlotte will gather again in the new year, beginning on Friday, January 10th.

In the interim, enjoy the time with family and friends.

Merry Christmas!

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Luke 2:8-15

It’s a Wrap…..Time for Fellowship!

This week marks the end of several things….FMMF Charlotte, related:

Hopefully you’ve read the final chapter in our current study, Hidden Christmas by Rev. Tim Keller.  In this last chapter you’ll find Keller’s summary of the book, through the eyes of God’s grace, the promise of salvation, the endless possibilities of fellowship with the Father, and the lesson of Jesus’ impact through ordinary means.  Hopefully, your study of this book has put you into a unique Christmas “spirit” like never before!  Thanks again to Jon Paschal for recommending this study.

This week also brings the end of another calendar year….and a wonderful year of study for FMMF Charlotte.  Whether you’ve come for just a couple weeks, or have been a weekly attendee, FMMF welcomes your contributions, your questions, your commitments.  So, let’s take time this week in simple “fellowship” to honor each other and honor what we’ve learned this year.  As a reminder, this Friday’s FMMF will be in Uptown at The Community Matters Cafe, 821 W. 1st Street, Charlotte, NC 28202

We have a table reserved for 10 people at 7:45 am under “Lenhart”.

I look forward to seeing you Friday morning, gathering in fellowship!

Hard Work…and Often Times Painful!

We’re on the final stretch this week in our book, “Hidden Christmas” by Tim Keller.  This week’s homework is to read chapters 7 and 8.

We discovered last week that there’s a lot of meat in the chapters so if you’re running short on time, at least get chapter 7 done.  Very likely that we’ll use next week to wrap up the book with a discussion on chapter 8.

The “plot” this week involves Joseph and Mary taking Jesus to the temple for circumcision.  An old man, who had been waiting on the Messiah, says to Mary:

“This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.  And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Luke 2:33-35

As you’ll dig into the text, you’ll see how God’s plan is that there will be some hard times, painful ones in fact, which lead to eventual peace.  Pay close attention to the analogies about the surgeon and the counselor.

Time permitting, we’ll wrap up the book with a discussion on chapter 8, where the author explains “So what’s Christmas all about anyway?”

Mike will be leading this week.

Meet at the Cornwell Center ready to go by 7:45 am.

(There’s) Something About Mary…..

Truthfully, the movie, “There’s Something About Mary“, starring Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller, is probably not one that fully aligns with our topic this week….with the focus on Mary, mother of Jesus.  But there really is “something” about (that) Mary that we’ll discuss this week.

Our author shares some great dialog about Mary’s faith.  She had so much to lose, it seems.  But blindly or not, she does not question God’s calling to her to be the mother of our Savior.

Homework this week is Chapters 5 and 6 from “Hidden Christmas”.  Rob Miller leads us this week.  Can’t wait to hear what he has cooked up!

Chapter 5 will discuss Mary.  Chapter 6 discusses the shepherds perspective.  What’s the common thread between these two chapters? ….. “How they responded to God’s calling….

As we storm ahead towards our own “hidden Christmas”, ask yourself “how and I responding…..?

Gather normal time at the Cornwell Center.  Rob will kick things off at 7:45 am.

Being Thankful……

Quick reminder that FMMF Charlotte will not meet this week, since many will be spending the Thanksgiving holiday with family/friends.

We’ll pick back up on our current series, Hidden Christmas by Tim Keller, next Friday, DEC 6th per normal.  Rob Miller will lead us next week, covering chapters 5 & 6 of the book.  #nuggetsalert

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.  God’s blessings always!
